Carbon neutral container terminal in Hamburg

By Jan Prahm March 18th, 2010

The dutch-british port development company Royal-Haskoning won the first prize in a market sounding conducted by the Hamburg Port Authority. The task was to make a proposal for a to be newly built container terminal Steinwerder in the Port of Hamburg.

Royal Haskonings proposal for the fully functional terminal with an annual capacity of 3.5 Mio. TEU suggests to implement the revolutionary idea of a carbon neutral container terminal. This will mainly be achieved by using electricity from renewable sources for all euipement handling because the terminal will be lorry-free and only trains will take the containers in and out. The container bridges run on electricity anyway.

Another unique innovative idea is to layout the terminal on a peninsula so that the public can access the terminal from the water side by water taxis.
