T&E published that the Commission has published its sustainability strategy for the EU, and it includes a cautiously-worded target for transport to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 60% in the period 1990-2050. This is the first time Brussels has put an overall reduction target for the whole transport sector on the table.
T&E director Jos Dings said: ‘This is a step forward, but it will not be enough to hit the EU’s 95% overall emissions reduction target for 2050 even if every other sector manages to achieve zero emissions, so something doesn’t add up. The real world impact of the target will also depend on how emissions are counted; currently biofuels are rated as zero emissions, for example.’
